Let us start with this basic question about life; is it
worth living? The fact that you are alive today, reading this topic, might be
proof enough that you believe in a certain value in living, although you might
have never thought deeply about this value and can’t even give a quick straight
answer if ever asked about it.
The need to have a clear answer to this question is
essential, for if life is worth living, then we better live it to the extent of
its worthiness, and we shall set this information as one of the main measures
behind our behaviors and decisions. But if life is not worth living, we’ll have
to dive deeper in the fact of our existence, to redefine reality with all its
factors, and see how deep the rabbit hole goes.
One point that must be considered while analyzing this
question is about how a good percentage of people would link the meaning of life
to their believes of a life after death. But doesn’t that indicate that life is
a test more than an opportunity? Wouldn’t that empty the meanings of this life
and amplify the importance of death?
On average, every forty seconds one person “fail the test”
and/or “loose the opportunity” and dies by suicide, which accounts for 1.8% of
the current worldwide deaths. The World Health Organization estimates that
suicide is the thirteenth leading cause of death worldwide. So why would
someone decide that life is not worth living? Why is it that the percentage of
suicide is higher among the youth and in countries with higher living standards?
What is your purpose in living? Is it about the number of
years in your life, or about the amount of life in your years? How would you
describe an ideal life?
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing, for when I
don't know what life is, I'll hardly know whether I’m living it or not, or
whether a person who lives it is fortune or unfortunate.
